And what you recommend ^_^ I don't know very many Akihabara-Kei artists so I would like to learn about more. I actually don't listen to a whole lot of Japanese music in general so anything you like, please share! And not just Japanese music, anything you like. Personally I listen mostly to of bubblegum dance, ambient, hyper eurobeat, experimental electronic (including but not limited to chiptune), and gabberrrrrr. Just about anything really.

Based on the reactions in my car, I think I might have a very bizarre mix of things I listen to.  :-[

It's a mix of ani-song, 90s alternative rock, ska, 80s new wave/synth-pop, with a sprinkle of some sappy power ballads. Of course "ani-song" is a wide range of styles and whatnot (and includes covers/remixes, like para-para covers), but as it was noted, I follow shows (then start following voices I like, or musical acts that sound good).

I actually don't really follow akiba-kei artists that much; I'll leave those to the others.  ;D

There was a thread in the old forums about some of this. If you're going to open it up to non Japanese music, I fear it'll will be a while before I can compile my list.  :-[ ;D

Well at the moment it's mostly Nine Inch Nails as Trent just played his final show. Honestly I haven't been in that much of a happy pop mood in a while. If anything this week, it's more Jrock/Visual Kei/GothLoli Industrial like Malice Mizer, L'arc en Ciel (Plus Hyde in Solo/Vamps form), Yousei Teikoku, and X-Japan when I'm not listening to more American/European stuff. And probably the most manufactured thing would be silly Hangry and Angry. I'm sure that's far different from most people here :) Also some hardcore swedish metal Opeth~

Hmm, I guess basic list of japanese stuff I listen to in the past not included in above would be:
Eufonius
Chihiro Yonekura
Arai Akino
Ali Project
Akina Nakamori
Dir En Grey
Do As Infinity
Every Little Thing
Garnet Crow
I've Sound members of various sorts especially Kotoko, Ayana, Lia, Kawada Mami
Globe
Hayashibara Megumi
Masami Okui/Jam Project
La'cryma Christi
Siam Shade
Buriguri/Tommy Heavenly/February 6
Two Mix
Kajuira Yuki
Olivia
The Pillows
Savage Genius
Galneryus

I am so not going to comment on Doujin remixes, there's too many in the universe.
Also my english/european music interest list is ridiculously long and probably not important :)

Well... I don't listen to non Japanese music that much. My playlist includes (besides Momoi and related)
  • Yoko Ishida (and her indie group J.e.t.)
  • KOTOKO
  • Megumi Hayashibara
  • Maaya Sakamoto
  • Hatsune Miku
  • the Indigo
  • Angela
  • See-saw
  • Chiaki Ishikawa
  • ALI PROJECT
  • Garnet Crow
  • OreSkaBand
  • Hikaru Utada
  • Younha
  • U-ka Saegusa IN db
Those are the artist I listen too... but I listen to a lot of Anime music as well.

I keep forgetting that Tomoyo is on the boards. I'm not the only one that goes in...unusual directions for musical tastes (well, odd for the usual anime/seiyuu crowds).

I'll just repost what I put the other forums with a slight edit.

Oreskaband
YUI
*The Brilliant Green/Tommy Heavenly6 (okay, Tommy February6, too)
Horie Yui (Hocchan)
Tamura Yukari (Yukarin)
THYME
micc/Sasao Miku
Puffy (I refuse to call them Puffy AmiYumi)
Zone
RieFu
Hayashibara Megumi
Atsumi Saori
Pizzicato Five
Sakai Noriko (Nori-P)
Hirosue Ryoko

I apparently really like:

Ishida Yoko (probably because of para para ani-song covers)
Nakagawa Shoko (Shokotan)
Okui Masami
the Indigo

Based on what a quick scan of my main music playlist.

I do like Kurobara Hozonkai (this is Yui Horie's goth rock band)..I need to get the full album (now that I have the singles). The album has Blue Heaven on it (though I just ripped it from the DVD to play on my iPod).

For non Japanese music, I'm more of a throwback...some of my tastes date back to bands and songs...that were around before some of you were born (I can't believe I wrote that). I'm going to look for a porch to sit on now so I can yell at some kids.

(yeah, I know there are quite a few people here it doesn't apply to, but still...)

*maybe Kawase Tomoko is more accurate.  :P

I like to listen to a lot of stuff, it depends on what mood I'm in. >.>;

If I'm feeling...

Sleepy? Punch me with a dose of I've - SHORT CIRCUIT or SHORT CIRCUIT II. I have lots of Momoi and KOTOKO lined up for when I'm on a long drive usually.

Peaceful? Go out to pasture with Enya, Vienna Teng, Sigur Ros, and classically arranged OSTs (Haibane Renmei, Spirited Away, etc). Imogen Heap is also pretty chill to listen to in a downtempo moment.

Excited? Time for Justice and Aphex Twin and Robert Miles and Darude and other electronica artists.

I actually like tenton's collection a whole lot, I have a fair amount of eurythmics, Journey, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel, and Duran Duran too <.<

There are a lot of artists out there that are one-hit wonders, too, like Sixpence None the Richer (Kiss Me, love the Japanese version) and The Bangles (Manic Monday).

The main thing that I like, though, is clean vocals; I feel that a lot of I've stuff is interestingly orchestrated, but KOTOKO/MELL/EIKO/etc's voices get vocoded and compressed so much sometimes...

My listening habits are a little weird, though, since I'm too lazy to assemble a playlist. :/ I usually queue up whatever album comes to mind at the time and run with it.

Bands I haven't mentioned:

the Indigo
savage genius
yozuca*
blue velvet
Lia
MOSAIC.WAV
Mizuki Nana
YURIA
supercell
angela
Hikaru Utada
Hamasaki Ayu
Daft Punk
Minori Chihara
key sounds label
eufonius
The Pillows
The Beatles
Bee Gees
Elton John
Styx
Pink Floyd
Dream Theatre
The Postal Service
The Mars Volta
ZUN (does he count?)
IOSYS
COOL&CREATE
Perfume
Bjork

Pandora Project and AMVs are a really good way to find music you like, too, I find.

For American music, it looks like I like the stuff that was made before I was born :P I'm stuck in the 80s/90s!

I guess we can call Sixpence a one hit wonder, but I always preferred their cover of There She Goes over Kiss Me.

And I think Walk Like an Egyptian, Eternal Flame and Hazy Shade of Winter (okay, that's a cover song) would like to have a word with you.  ;D

Hah I should mention the lead singer leigh nash did a full album with delerium as a project called fauxliage. The album is actually pretty cool. Of course I really fucking love Delerium. I mean that with a passion :) (and their live concert was soooo awesome)

I am actually a really big fan of Tomoko Kawase! She's one of my favorites, I absolutely love TommyFebruary's personality. I'm a sucker for whimsically narcissistic girls. What can I say. But I don't have any of her albums. Megumi Hayashibara is also a looong time favorite since some of my first anime was Slayers and Blue Seed. I used to listen to alot of visual-kei in early high school but I sort of out grew it or maybe I'm just not exposed enough to it. X-Japan is still awesome though. (KURENAI~~~)

Lets see... Right now I mostly listen to...

American/European myusic

Strawberry Switchblade
ToyBox
Pixies
Pogo
Death From Above 1979
Bikini Kill
Miss Papaya
Bambee
Blood Brothers
Crystal Castles
Mars Volta
Smoosh
RadioHead
Elliot Smith

Japanese

YMCK
Perfume
COLTEMONIKA
W (Double You)
Strawberry Machine
SHE
Aural Vampire

Thats just what I've listened to somewhat recently. I've been watching Momoi concert DVDs at least once a week, they make me so happy @__@

Also, I listen to alotalotalot of video game music. Lately the Disgaea OST but I always have time for anything Mega Man xD I'm not sure how much vidyo game music I have but it's probably double the amount of anything else I have. I mentioned that I also like Eurobeat but I mostly listen to whats associated with Initial D (Theres so much that it can satiate anyone's eurobeat craving!) I also like J-core but not as much as good old fashioned Rotterdam hardstyle.   I have alot of Anime OSTs but mostly I listen to the Ichigo Mashimaro, Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, Berserk, and another I can't remember... I don't have my music lists to look at so I'm just calling stuff off memory! Theres alot of music that I love but don't have but Youtube is good for a quick fix.

I really like- My Little Airport which is Chinese. It's really cute and a little nonsensical.

American/European myusic
ToyBox
Pixies

ToyBox? We talking that Danish eurobeat group that kind of sounds like Aqua? I remember them. I have their first CD around here somewhere. Catchy stuff.

The Pixies? Reaching a little farther back in time, I see. Watch as I do the same.  ;D

I know I'm going to miss a lot of things, but there's a lot of acts to list. For English based stuff, there's:

U2
The Police
Nirvana
No Doubt
Pearl Jam
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
Dance Hall Crashers
Save Ferris
Sublime
The Specials
The Go-Gos
The Bangles
Weezer
Reel Big Fish
Blondie
Berlin
The Smiths
Joy Division/New Order
They Might Be Giants
Madness
Skatalites
Hepcat
The Carpenters
Chuck Berry (blues style rock is the best)
Elvis Presley
The Clash
Lisa Loeb
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones
REM
The Pretenders
Red Hot Chili Peppers (Flea is such a good funk bassist)

There are also a bunch of bands from the 80s and 90s that I like (e.g. the Cars, Eurythmics, Duran Duran, Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth, Soul Asylum, Green Day, Blink 182, Rage Against the Machine), but maybe not as high on the list. I think that's a strange enough mix of stuff.

I don't think it's very strange at all! I just posted what I had been listening to recently. I love RHCP <3 I raised myself on Californiacation. I also love The Police, but I might like Tears for Fears better sometimes. I don't have any SKA music myself, but a friend of mine listens to it alot. He says that Reel Big Fish isn't a great Ska band but I like it, although I like alot of other Ska music too.

Toybox! They only have two albums. Alot of people compare other bubblegum dance groups to aqua but they're just as similar as in any other genre of music (in my opinion)

I don't really get out much, and thus, my playlists tend to be mostly random ani-songs, Miku Hatsune arrangements, Touhou, and Momoi.

Artists I like (in no particular order):

Minami Kuribayashi
Kanako Itou
MOSAIC.WAV
KOTOKO
eufonius
CooRie
Morning Musume.
Shoko Nakagawa
See-Saw
Flow
savage genius
Cy-rim rev.
Eiko Shimamiya
Megumi Hayashibara
Lia
Oreskaband
Yoko Ishida
Round Table featuring Nino
Hikaru Utada
V6
Ali Project
Rie fu

Though, lately I've been listening to an inordinate amount of Touhou doujin music. Even though I've never played the games, I think there's just something about having an infinite number of "U.N. Owen was her?" remixes.

I am obsessed with "moe" voices and listen to just about anything with those kind of voices... lol

Besides Momoi lately I like...

IDOLM@STER - Amazingly I like all of them, but my favorite is Shimoda Asami as Ami/Mami. She does so many kooky things with her voice. I hope she will do more solo work. Looking forward to the new seiyuu in Dearly Stars too ;D

MOSAIC.WAV - I have been a fan of theirs for about as long as Momoi ;D

ave;new - I can always rely on them for something cute, cool, or both ;D

IOSYS - lately they do a lot of Touhou stuff which I do not know a lot about, but I listen to a lot anyway because I like a lot of the IOSYS members. I like their original units like Albatrosicks and Dear Chocolat but they don't get a lot of attention compared to their Touhou remixes :'( My favorite member is miko, I love her singing and radio!! Not just among IOSYS, in general she is one of my favorite individual singers. After that comes ARM and Ayu.

nomico - She started as a doujin singer and got to be a pro. Her voice is soooooo cute but for some reason she can't get popular. I wish she did more radio because she's also very funny.

Toromi - She is a doujin singer who played Mii in the game version of Popotan. The first time I heard her, she was singing some UNDER17 songs, so I compared her to Momoi and didn't like her that much ::) Much later I listened again and realized she is very good ;D She's also REALLY good at drawing. Like nomico I dunno why she's not more popular!

Tamura Yukari - I loooove her voice, but her songs can be hit or miss for me... but her radio is one of my absolute favorites, she is soooo funny.

chiptune - I like to listen to a lot of chiptune artists and some of my friends make this kind of music ;D I like to go to chiptune concerts when I can.

My favorite non-Japanese bands were Junior Senior and Be Your Own Pet who both broke up last year :'(

Junior Senior did that pixel art music video "Move Your Feet" that people still are always making forum icons from and stuff. I love their happy fun music, and the lyrics are so funny too.

Be Your Own Pet is like soooo different than the other stuff I listen to that I just love it haha. I think I am the only person who listens to them for the yandere moe factor ;D

Those are probably my main artists.. at the moment!!

I listen to Gacha Gacha Cute Figu@mate a lot... (Although not as much recently)

IOSYS is good stuff. Their arrangements are almost always to my liking! miko's voice is extremely cute and addictive!

Well, specifically for Toy-Box, since they're also a guy and a girl duo with fairly similar voices. ^_^

Tears for Fears is another good group. My list could go on forever... :-[
